Former Abia State Governor and African Pillar of Sports, Orji Kalu, has congratulated Enugu Rangers International FC on their victory in the Nigeria Premier Football League, describing the achievement as a product of discipline, resilience, and strong leadership.
In a statement celebrating the club’s success, Kalu praised the combined efforts of the Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, alongside the management, coaching staff, players, and supporters, noting that their unity had restored pride to Nigerian football.
He emphasized that Rangers’ triumph reflects what can be achieved when vision and institutional support align, adding that Nigerian clubs must begin to translate domestic success into continental dominance.
Drawing parallels with past achievements in Nigerian club football, Kalu urged Rangers to replicate the continental breakthrough of Enyimba’s golden era in 2003 and 2004, when the Aba-based club secured major continental honours and elevated Nigeria’s football reputation across Africa.
“As one of Nigeria’s most historic clubs, Rangers have shown that Nigerian football can compete at the highest level with the right structure and commitment,” he said in part of his remarks.
Kalu, who recalled his tenure as Governor of Abia State and his support for Enyimba FC during its period of domestic and continental dominance, noted that sustained investment and leadership were key to sporting excellence. Under that era, Enyimba achieved multiple league titles and continental success, including victories in the CAF Champions League and other major tournaments.
Reaffirming his advocacy for sports development across Africa, Kalu stressed that Nigerian clubs must aim beyond national titles to reclaim their status on the continental stage. He expressed confidence that Rangers possess the talent and structure required to compete strongly in Africa’s elite club competitions.
“Winning the league is just the beginning; the real challenge is conquering Africa,” he said, encouraging the club to target continental glory in the upcoming season.
He concluded by congratulating Rangers once again and urging them to “keep the flag flying,” while calling for sustained investment in football to strengthen youth development and national pride across the continent.
