The Islamic State West Africa Province, (ISWAP), a terrorist group operating in parts of Nigeria, has claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack on the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre where authorities say one security personnel was shot dead while three others were critically injured.
In a viral twitter video in arabic shared by the group, inmates were seen fleeting the facility amidst chants of Allah Akbar by the terrorist believed to have carried out the attack to set free their members held within the center.
A twitter user, Tomasz Rolbiecki wrote, “ISWAP has just claimed responsibility for the Kuje prison break, saying it has succeeded in freeing dozens of prisoners.”
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Correctional Service, (NCoS), has said that a security personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,, (NSCDC), drafted to the center was shot dead by the attackers who storm the facility through the fence and the main entrance using explosive devices.
A total of 879 inmates escaped the facility during the attack. Out of this number, 443 were said to be on the run, another 443 were capture leaving the total inmates currently in the facility at 551 in total, a statement from the services states.
According to the statement signed by the Relations Officer of the Service, Abubakar Umar, “the service will deploy its Corrections Information Management System , (CIMS), in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission, (NIMC), to track all fleeing inmates and return them to custody.”
