Kalu Seeks Compensation for Nigerians’ Damaged Assets in South Africa, Backs Tinubu’s Diplomatic Efforts*
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has called on the South African government to compensate Nigerians whose businesses and assets were destroyed during attacks in the country, while commending President Bola Tinubu’s diplomatic handling of the situation.
Kalu, who is also Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), made the call on the floor of the Senate while supporting a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong on the safety and welfare of Nigerians in South Africa.
The former Abia State governor lamented what he described as the unfair treatment of Nigerians despite the pivotal role Nigeria played in South Africa’s liberation struggle.
According to the International business mogul, Nigeria committed over $15 billion, alongside immense diplomatic, financial and human resources, to support South Africa during the anti-apartheid era.
“It is unfortunate that Nigerians are being treated this way despite all Nigeria sacrificed for South Africa. We must demand compensation for Nigerians whose assets have been destroyed,” Kalu said.
He applauded President Tinubu and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs for facilitating assistance to affected Nigerians, describing the intervention as timely and commendable.
The senator urged the Federal Government to sustain diplomatic engagement with Pretoria while pursuing justice through international legal mechanisms where necessary.
Kalu cautioned against retaliation, insisting that dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to international law remain the best approach to resolving the matter.
“We should continue on the path of caution. We are not going to respond forcefully. We will engage through dialogue, the international community and international courts,” he stated.
